It seems everyone in hip-hop has an opinion about Iggy Azalea, and now Eve and Jill Scott have weighed in.
Joining Shade 45’s Sway In The Morning on Friday, promoting their new Lifetime movie With This Ring, after pleasantries host Sway Calloway turned the conversation to cultural appropriation and how the Australian import Azalea is at the center of this discussion.
Eve spoke first, staying pretty neutral on the matter, saying, “At the end of the day I get it. I get that people might be upset about certain things but yeah she’s white but they grew up with our shit. Hip-hop is everywhere — every neighborhood, every country, every city — and it didn’t just hit… yes it’s from us and it’s our thing but she’s representing a group of girls right now as well.”
But she continued, making it known she’s not really a fan: “I think people right now are too quick to give too many accolades to new people. That’s the one thing I just can’t stand. Let her do her thing. It’s not my cup of tea but she’s representing for somebody. She’s doing her thing. What are you gonna do?”
Scott had similar sentiments, calling Azalea’s style a “big bite” of Da Brat and Eve and saying that made it “challenging” for her.
Though, she was sure to qualify she has her own influences, continuing, “I’m a mixture of Sarah Vaughan and of five other things… So if someone else who comes from that era, they be looking at me like… ‘shh, you aight’ So that has been the only thing that stops me is I know where that comes from.”
On that, the two agreed Azalea isn’t “original” before adding a term to her rapping accent — “Blaccent.”
“She’s from a different place and I’ve said this before, it would be dope to hear her with her swag,” said Eve. “Who are you, what are you, what is that?”

ABC has closed a deal for a multi-camera comedy project to star actress-rapper Eve, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and ABC Studios. The project, which is eyed for the 2014-15 development season, is looking for a writer. I hear Kaplan approached Eve (full name Eve Jeffers) with the idea for a multi-camera interracial romantic comedy. The two pitched it to ABC, which bought the project with penalty. Eve and Kaplan (ABC’s The Neighbors) executive produce. ICM Partners-repped Eve previously toplined her eponymous sitcom on UPN and starred in the Barbershop movie franchise.
Eve and her boyfriend Max Cooper are pregnant! Sources say she is now “a little more than 3 months.” If you are wondering why she went the swirl route..it could be because the guy is a BILLIONAIRE and yes that is with a “B.” This will be Eve’s first child and Max’ fifth. He has enough money to have about 62 children…lol
1st Lady of Ruff Ryder, Eve, was spotted leaving La Guardia airport in NY this weekend…she was asked if she knew what was going on with Ruff Ryders and if DMX would ever get back together with them…she responded:
“I’m sure you’ll see Ruff Ryders back together.”
But after being asked if she has spoken with them or X, she said no…so it’s safe to say SHE isn’t trying to reunite with them at all!!…lol
